There are currently two main areas in our community work at Áras Inis Gluaire, both of which are focused on providing services to the older people in the greater Erris area. Both are coordinated by our designated Community Officer, Lorraine Wilson.

The Men’s Community Initiative
The Men’s Community Initiative was established in June 2011 and is funded by Pobal. Its aim is to address rural isolation, particularly amongst older men, and we have developed a range of events and activities to help alleviate this. Covering a broad range of interests, we host men’s health awareness events, provide exercise opportunities, organise day outings and offer new skills training. Social gatherings, encouraging and opportuning new interests and involvement in the arts programming at Áras Inis Gluaire are also essential elements of the Initiative.

The Erris Care & Repair Service

1000 pix Care & Repair logo on white background

The Erris Care & Repair Service was launched in 2013 and is a wonderful service to offer in the region. We hold a Community Partnership with Age Action Ireland, which is Ireland’s leading charity promoting positive ageing & better services for all older people. We are working closely with them to roll out services for the older people of Erris.  Currently we are operating the following free and confidential service to the over 60’s:

The Care Service is a home visiting / befriending service that provides social contact for older people at risk of isolation in their own homes.
The Repair Service uses a pool of volunteers and handypersons to carry out minor home tasks for older people such as gardening, painting, hanging curtains, installing security locks and so on.
