Failte go hÁras Inis Gluaire, Ireland’s only bilingual arts centre, situated in the beautiful environs of Belmullet town on the Erris Peninsula. Inis Gluaire is an island off the coast of the Mullet Peninsula where the fabled Children of Lir were banished for 300 years to live out their lives as swans. Our mission is to provide a cultural, social, economic and educational service, via the medium of the arts, for and on behalf of the Erris community, one of Ireland’s most outstanding areas of natural beauty.
Áras Inis Gluaire is a purpose built, state-of-the-art arts space that is part of Áisleann Bhéal an Mhuirthead (Belmullet Civic Centre). Outside, there is a children’s playground, landscaped areas and generous car parking facilities.
Áras Inis Gluaire includes:
- a 170 seat auditorium (for theatre and cinema) with retractable seating
- an exhibition / gallery space – which is named after Rita Nolan, author of Within the Mullet and former member of Ionad Ealaíona Iorras Teoranta, the company that runs the Áras
- a recording studio, including a local radio facility – Iorras FM
- dressing rooms
- meeting rooms
- administration space
- a reception and café area
We welcome all visitors, either to browse and have a fresh cup of coffee, or to engage with our staff who are always on hand to show you around. Tá mile mile fáilte roimh chách.
Ionad Ealaíona Iorras Teo., The Court Service and Údarás na Gaeltachta completed the building of Áras Inis Gluaire in January 2007 and it was officially opened by an tUachtarán Máire Mhic Giolla Íos on 21st April 2007. The total value of the project was estimated to be in excess of €6 million.Since 2007, Áras Inis Gluaire has run an annual arts programme, engaging with professional and amateur artistes in all artistic genres.
We run workshops, school/community residencies and cinema clubs. Educational programmes include creative writing, visual art, photography, traditional music and IT. Our Local Training Initiative (LTI) has operated under the auspices of FÁS for the last two years offering over 20 students training in Performing Arts, Sound Technology, Event Management and SYOB. This year we are especially delighted to offer a BA Degree Course in Visual Art in conjunction with Dublin Institute of Technology, Coláiste Chomáin and Mayo Co. Co. Commencing in September this unique programme will offer students a particularly spectacular setting to engage with a fully fledged 3rd level university education. The local community radio station, Iorras FM, airs live every Friday and Saturday from our inhouse studio and has won national awards in the Commissioned Programming Category.
It has been our pleasure to host, amongst others, Sean Keane, Damien Dempsey, Mick Flannery, the Erris Players, Eleanor McEvoy, The David Munnelly Band, Jon Kenny, Matt Cunningham, the Halloran Brothers, City Theatre Dublin, National Youth Orchestra of Ireland, the Garda Band, Eleanor Shanley, Liam Óg Ó Flynn, Paddy Glackin, Mairéad and Tríona Ní Dhomhaill, the Fanzini Brothers, Fíbín, Sharon Shannon, Donal O’Kelly and Dick Gaughan.
