The highly-acclaimed Irish comedy ‘3 Hail Mary’s’ by Tommy Marren heads on a nationwide tour following its phenomenal success across Ireland and the UK a number of years ago.
Themed on the subject of dementia the play is set in a Nursing Home in the West of Ireland over the course of one afternoon in the Autumn of 2018. The three main characters – Mary O’Toole, Mary O’Neill and Mary O’Brien – all suffer from memory loss and have become almost inseparable friends during their time together in the home. However, due to renovations part of the home is being closed down and so the three Marys must go their separate ways.
On their final day together they set about telling each other their entire life stories. Mary O’Toole is a devout Catholic with great devotion to Our Lady; Mary O’Neill – originally a Londoner – reminisces about her stage career in the musicals and the loss of her beloved husband Frank and Mary O’Toole recalls her life as a nurse that took her to all corners of the world! In the telling of the stories they laugh, they cry and even sing and dance!
This production is a unique piece of theatre as it gives audiences a rare insight into dementia from the perspective of the person living with the condition. It is written with sensitivity, delivered with respect and the many plots and sub-plots are intriguing. The storyline is delivered with loads of humour as some of the retelling of the stories gets lost in translation!!
